TRAPUNTO di COLORE
Taken from the Italian, trapunto di colore literally means, quilts of color. My ongoing curiosity with color as well my enthusiasm for quilt-making informs this series of encaustic works on panel. My work often highlights our relationships with one another. In these paintings, color serves as a metaphor for the interactions that we humans share with one another. Just as each of us reacts to others depending on the situation in which we find ourselves, how we perceive colors depends upon the surrounding colors. These paintings are essentially conversations in color - where analogous hues sit quietly over ruckus complementary tones first applied to the panel. In some areas of the paintings, the viewer can see the hints of the past peeking through the layers of paint alluding to the discontent of the original color relationships. In these images, I employ the basic elements of traditional quilt-making: color, form, and thread. These works visually comment on the longstanding traditions of generations of sewers who sat learning and sharing together through the common experience of making quilts. In creating these paintings, I honor the calm, repetitive nature of sewing. Additionally, I celebrate the vibrancy of relationships: both in color and with one another while simultaneously tying back to my own Italian roots.
